Broker Dealer

Back to Index

Definition:
A Broker-Dealer firm acts as a principal during trading transactions. Brokerage houses will make recommendations on securities, provide research, and offer all custodial and collateral services.  The firm is paid a commission for acting as a dealer when it buys or sells a security for its own account (and at its own risk).  The firm then charges the customer a markup or markdown.
