Definition:
Of Counsel refers to 4 different types of lawyers at a firm: 1. A part-time lawyer who is associated with a law firm, but is not considered an employee or member of the firm. He/she is consulted on particular cases that are related to his/her specialties. 2. A lawyer with many years of experience practicing law as an associate, who is hired by a firm (as a lateral hire) on the path to shortly becoming a partner. 3. An experienced lawyer who did not make partner, but still fills a permanent senior position in the firm. 4. A semi-retired partner or member of a firm who is available to be consulted on specific matters when requested; he/she is no longer actively involved in the daily work of the firm.
